If You See Something, Say Something! The Power of Recognized Potential
Sep 30, 2024
US gymnast and bronze medalist, Stephen Nedoroscik, is one of my favorite personalities from the ’24 Summer Olympics. His specialized role on the team and Clark Kent persona were prime material for journalists, so we heard a lot about his road to success. I was struck by Stephen’s description of a moment that influenced the direction of his development.
In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Stephen recalled a single, impactful statement from a club coach who recognized his skill on the pommel horse: "I think you could be a national champion one day." The power of these words was not in the observation, but rather in the direct communication to Stephen. These words from a mentor inspired him to pursue ambitious goals and sustained his dream through years of hard work to develop his abilities.
Stephen’s story highlights a crucial truth about leadership: the power and responsibility leaders have to mentor and inspire those they lead. It’s not enough for leaders to simply see potential in their team members; we must also communicate those observations clearly and directly. A simple expression of belief can transform someone’s path, encouraging them to reach heights they never imagined.
In Stephen’s case, one coach’s belief and communication of that belief shaped the course of his life, leading to an Olympic medal. It’s a powerful reminder that the words and support we offer as leaders can have a lasting impact.
As we celebrate Stephen’s achievement, let it also serve as a call to action: invest in your team, recognize their potential, and, most importantly, communicate that belief to them. Be the spark that ignites their journey to greatness.
